Proffitt and Holt is a privately owned family business and is now one of Hertfordshire’s longest established estate agency practices. The firm was founded in 1939, (not the best year to be starting a business!) by Edward Proffitt & Hugh Gough and at that time was known as Proffitt & Gough, based in St Albans Road, Watford

In 1964 Graham Holt joined the company and along with Mr Proffitt, they built and developed the residential arm of the business, establishing a reputation as one of the most respected estate agency and surveying firms in the area. The founding partners retired in 1977 and in 1989, Richard Holt joined his father in the business making it a truly family affair.

Having established a reputation as one of the leading firms in Watford, P&H also became known as specialists in the sale of village & country homes in areas such as Chipperfield, Sarratt & Bovingdon and in 1991 the firm expanded for the first time, opening an office in Kings Langley. The expansion was an immediate success and the office went from strength to strength and in 1999 a third office was opened in the expanding village of Abbots Langley. The start of the new century heralded more change and in 2000 the Watford office relocated into larger premises on The Parade and the firm changed its name to Proffitt & Holt. After over 40 years in the business, Graham Holt retired in 2004 leaving Richard to take the business forward. 

The company ethos has always been to provide a highly professional and personal service, based on honesty, integrity and always working in the best interests of our clients. Whilst we are proud of our heritage and maintain these values at all times, we understand that in this fast moving modern world, the estate agency business is constantly changing and therefore we continue to modernize, diversify and grow.

We strongly believe that our industry should have more regulation and that estate agents should be licensed as in many other parts of the world. Until that time comes we continue to support and be part of our industry bodies to demonstrate our commitment to improving standards and offering a professional service. We are members of the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA), the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) and The Guild of Professional Estate Agents. We also subscribe to The Property Ombudsman Scheme.

At the heart of our success are our people.
